Hip hop music don’t raise your kids !

Yep that’s right peeps. Learn that and take it to heart. First off, let’s get one thing right the music you keep pointing a finger at does not represent the entire Hip hop culture which has more elements than just music. I won’t get into that education right now. Let’s talk about some more things hip hop music is not: serial killers, columbine mass murderers, policy writers, controllers of media, heads of entertainment distribution channels (i.e radio, TV, music companies, etc.), presidents of universities, blah blah blah. Basically what I am saying is that you can try and cut off the music, I say try because if you know the history of the art that is not possible, but the same problems and issues you accuse it of causing will still be here. Why? Because they have been here before you ever knew of hip hop music and will be here long after you stop supporting the art form. People become what they know, what they’ve been around, and get influenced by what they grow up around. Children who have seen years of abuse or have been abused themselves within their own household get affected by that in some way and that manifests itself. When it comes to artist, it manifest through music. Think about it.

I had someone call the radio show this past week when we had Ralph McDaniels (pioneer, documentarian, predecessor of MTV, VH1) on and he complained about how rap wasn’t music blah blah blah and in his day there was real music blah blah blah. Ok listen, everything changes, you can’t expect music now to be like music in the 70’s, we are way past that. Times have changed. History can’t be the present. It plays a part in the present and future. Which leads me to this: If rap music is so bad and it’s so this and that for all you people from the 70’s and past generations, then doesn’t that mean that you guys and gals had something to do with that and you failed on some level? I mean history plays a role in the future. Bling bling, pimps, hoes, hustlers were not created by hip hop music and artists, they were already in existence. Some of those very artists had contact with and were brought up by such things as kids. Think about what kind of affect that has on a person LONG TERM. If you don’t stop the root problems from growing Youuuuuuu! will never have progress. So keep trying to get the artist to change their lyrics without changing the environments that breed the ideas for the lyrics you hate and see how far you get.

One last thing, for all you people who want to hear the positive artist and support other things besides the “buffoonery”, when was the last time Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Dead Prez, Jean Grae, The Roots, etc etc went platinum? And I’m talking before the ring tone and download age. Think about what I’m asking you.

Please comment agree, disagree, send threats, insults, whatever, Let’s GET IT ON !

I dont know,

I've listened to you guys show and I find most of what you play to be buffoonish. No disrepect but the whole program is kinda counter progressive. So my question to you and all the other radio programs that insist on feeding us a steady diet of bullshit is, who do we blame. The artists who make that garbage or the clowns who play it.

Futhermore, when did record sales become the mark of how GOOD a work of music was? If your only argument for not playing artists like Talib and Jean Grey are because they aren't going platinum, shouldnt you also take responsibility for the fact that you would rather play a Young Joc record then to help QUALITY Hip Hop get exposed?

Or is it just about trying to get on at Hot 97 and be the next ass-clown up there?

Just asking The Indifferent Listener
I’m glad you listened. But how long have you listened? Most of what we play buffoonish, I strongly disagree. We have given spots and shine to a lot of new artist who would otherwise not get any light: Harlems Cash, Outasight, Esso, Sorrows Child, UG, Dirty Birdy, etc etc. Including TALIB, JEAN GRAE, MOS DEF, DEAD PREZ, THE ROOTS, etc. As a matter of fact, we played a lot of Talib’s latest album when it first dropped. Just recently we played a remix to Hot Thing featuring Jean Grae that no one else is playing. You can’t be a selective listener to Thermal Soundwaves, it’s a variety entertainment program that will not be ONE way all the time. We juggle. My argument was not about playing artist who were not platinum because we do that all the time. My point was if people love Talib and Jean so much they should be going platinum like the garbage artist you hate. It’s not the artist fault, Read what I said again in the blog dude. We are not commercial and don’t get money to play records from labels. If you have good music, we will spin it. I don’t think you really understood what was said in the blog. I wouldn’t rather play a Yung Joc record, his skills are mediocre at best fam. Dude if I wanted to get on Hot 97, I could have did that years ago but they weren’t rocking the way I wanted to. Plus, I didn’t feel like tap dancing or performing for chicken. I appreciate you being Indifferent and invite more of your comments everyday all day. Listen to the show more often and call up 212-491-4685. You will find we give quality a chance son.
